Your yearly cost

PPOHSA plan

Yearly total at every level of care

Premiums plus your share of care, minus employer HSA money, for care from $0 up to past both out-of-pocket maximums. The dots mark the care you expect.

What this quick version leaves out

  • Copays. On a PPO, visits and prescriptions often cost a flat copay, which makes a light year a bit cheaper than shown.
  • Family deductibles. On family coverage, how each person's deductible sits inside the family one changes when the plan starts paying.
  • Taxes. Money you put in an HSA yourself goes in before taxes, which favors the HSA plan.
  • Two employers. If your spouse has coverage through work, there are more combinations to compare; see your plan or your spouse's.

Questions people ask

How do I know how much care to expect?

Start from last year: add up the allowed amounts on your claims from your insurer's website. Adjust for anything you know is coming, like a surgery or a baby, or for care you won't need again.

Why doesn't the calculator ask about copays?

To keep it quick, it treats all care as going toward the deductible and coinsurance. On a PPO, copays usually make office visits and prescriptions cheaper than that, so a light year on the PPO can cost a bit less than shown. HerePup's app prices every visit and prescription from your own claims.

Does the HSA tax break change the answer?

It adds to the HSA plan's advantage. Money you put in an HSA yourself skips income tax and, through payroll, Social Security and Medicare taxes, so paying care costs from it saves your tax rate on that money. This calculator leaves the tax savings out.
